Many
Right Ways
Designing Your Home Child Care Environment
Successful family child care providers believe
that their environment sets the stage for the kind of care they offer
children. But environments don't all have to be the same. In Many Right
Ways, we see a variety of rich child care settings that reflect how each
home, group of children, and program is individual. Engaged children and
experienced providers illustrate hundreds of ways to design unique, quality,
home-based environments. Covering such topics as learning areas and
materials; the family's adaptations to and for childcare; outdoor space
health, safety, and routines; communicating with families; and accessibility
and storage. These classes are excellent training for current and new
providers.
The Workshops: (2 hour workshops)
*Session 1: Planning For Your
Space
This session teaches about different types of "space" and how to
allocate it, organization and aesthetics, making materials accessible and
the tax consideration of space. There are many "right ways" top design
a home child care environment that works for you, your family, your business
and your home.
*Session 2: Setting Up for Child Directed Play
This session teaches about mixed age groups and play materials, using
familiar and emerging themes, combining play materials, and using children's
real experiences.
*Session 3: Creating Activity Areas
This session teaches about the importance of defined spaces and activities,
quiet spaces, specific learning areas, and daily caretaking routines.
There are many right ways to make
improvements in environment. Each home, each provider, and each group
of children is unique, so the ideal environment for any one program is
unique. These workshops will provide ideas and methodology of setting
up an environment that works for your situation.
Focusing on the environment produces
significant outcomes in quality improvement, whether measured by parent
approval, quality rating scales, the National Association for Family Child
Care (NAFCC) accreditation, the Family Day Care Rating Scale (FDCRS), child
satisfaction, or the quality of a provider's work life. |
