
Good Talking With You
A series of 5 two hour classes
dealing with language acquisition through conversation. It shows how
to nurture language through conversations-conversations that teach, inform
and build strong bonds and vital communication skills.
The 5 two hour sessions must be taken in order.
- Session 1: Oh Say What They See
(Teach language stimulation techniques)
Oh Say What They See gives an overview of language stimulation
techniques. It shows how language develops and the pivotal role adults
have in the process. A dramatic before-and-after sequence shows how a
child makes progress when his mother learns support techniques.
Viewers will learn:
* How children acquire language
* How we help children build receptive and expressive language by talking
with them
* How to help children build vocabulary by giving them word labels for
things they touch and see
* How to follow a child's lead in conversations and encourage talking
- Session 2: Let's Talk
(Start conversations that teach)
Model interactions step-by-step
What's this? What color is that? Conversing with a young child takes more
than asking questions like these. Let's Talk helps you teach viewers how
to start conversations, even with children they are just getting to know,
by tuning in to their interests and needs.
Viewers will learn:
* How conversations help children develop language
* Key communication skills that invite children and encourage talking
* How to start a conversation of interest to a child
* How to avoid asking questions that stop conversations
* How to correct a child's speech/language errors in a positive way
- Session 3: Now You're Talking (Extend
conversations & expand learning)
Show the strategies
Now You're Talking shows adults taking conversations to the next level,
drawing children out and keeping them involved. Remarkable interactions
captured at a language-based school illustrate the benefits of making
conversations a daily goal.
Viewers will learn:
* What topics children want to talk about
* How to add to the child's topic and extend conversation
* How to ask questions that stimulate thinking and problem solving
* How to support all of a child's efforts to communicate and develop
language
- Session 4: Between You and Me
(Facilitate conversations between children)
Teach adults to be a link
Limited language and social skills keep many children from interacting,
often causing frustration and disruptive behavior. Now, teach your viewers
how to facilitate so children can communicate, make their wants and needs
known and practice working together.
Viewers will learn:
* How to help children attend to each other in conversations
* How to help children establish and maintain a topic
* How to refer questions and comments from one child to another
* How to interpret for children who lack speech or language skills
- Session 5: Space to Grow
(How the environment supports language & learning)
Design to promote interaction
Space to Grow demonstrates how to create learning centers that support the
development of cognitive, motor and social skills, with special emphasis
on language acquisition. Viewers see how children engage with one another
and how staff enrich language learning at every center.
Viewers will learn:
* What elements in the environment help children feel comfortable and
competent
* How to arrange materials to help children act independently
* How to set up effective learning centers, including block area, art
area, sensory table, carpentry area, dramatic play and language arts areas
