Promoting positive mental health in young children begins
in infancy with responsive caregiving by the important people in a baby's
life and proceeds through early childhood with consistent and quality
nurturing and caregiving.
The Six Keys: Strategies for Promoting Children’s Mental
Health in Early Childhood Programs is designed to support the work of early
childhood professionals caring for young children in a variety of settings.
Information will be shared to help child-care practitioners and educators to
become more aware of the importance of emotional development for children.
The Six Keys: Strategies for Promoting Children’s Mental
Health in Early Childhood Programs provides support to early childhood
practitioners through training and educational opportunities around the
emotional development of children. It is a holistic approach that
helps practitioners examine their role in children's mental health, as well
as environment, temperament, risk factors, and resilience.
This course consists of a series of seven 2-4 hour
workshops, which include theories of emotional development, resilience,
self-regulation, temperament, and many useful strategies for the early
childhood setting. Training is appropriate for child care, Head Start,
special education, Learning Readiness, and early childhood providers and
educators.
The Six Keys: Strategies for Promoting Children’s Mental
Health in Early Childhood Programs is based on the curriculum by the same
name and uses evidence-based practice and current research to demonstrate
key components necessary for promoting emotional well-being in early
childhood programs. This training curriculum is by the
Center for
Inclusive Child Care.
The workshops include:
- Why All the Fuss About a Child's Emotional
Development?
An introductory session about the importance of emotional development and
mental health.
Key 1: Provide responsive caregiving.
- How Do We Give Children a Strong Start?
Exploring the theories of emotional development and practical applications
in early childhood.
Key 2: Ensure mastery of key emotional milestones.
- Why Do Children Act the Way They Do?
Learning about a child's temperament, behavioral style, and individual
characteristics and patterns in how they experience and respond to their
environment.
Key 3: Understanding How A Child Is "Wired".
- How To Teach Children to Know Their Own Engines.
Learning emotional regulation is perhaps the most important achievement
for children in early childhood and is crucial to their positive mental
health and will impact a children's' relationships with others for the
rest of their lives.
Key 4: Teach Self-Regulation Skills
- What Does It Mean to Be "At Risk"?
Learning about external and internal stressors that can impact a child's
development in any of the major domains: cognitive, physical, social, and
emotional and how to help them deal with these stressors.
Key 5: Support and Enhance Resilience
- Making and Keeping Friends.
Caregivers have an impact on helping a child learn the skills of social
competencies and successful relationships will improve a child's mental
health, self esteem, problem solving abilities, conflict resolution
skills, and sense of self and belonging.
Key 6: Teach Friendship Skills
- Tools for Promoting Children's Mental Health
Learning to provide guidelines, modeling, reinforcement, and support to
help children understand, recognize, and respond to their own feelings and
the feelings of others.
Summary: Practical Applications for Skill Development.

session is recommended prior to session 7.
